Recently, our own Dr. Becker took part in a rewarding mission trip to Honduras. With a generously donated Iridex, packed in five separate suitcases, he was able to provide laser treatment to a well-needed population—an area consisting of about 3 million people with only two known lasers of its kind in the entire country.
The need for this treatment was so profound that people traveled as far away as San Salvador, five hours away, to obtain his services. Patients were all pre-screened by an optometrist who worked out of the clinic one day a week. Dr. Becker re-examined all the patients and performed 30 laser treatments at no cost to them. Primarily, these laser services were for treating diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusions.
The mission trip was so rewarding that Dr. Becker is already planning a return visit next year. During this time, he hopes to set up a diabetic screening and retinal laser clinic that will allow him to screen approximately 100 patients a day and perform laser treatments to those patients in need. Also, his son Karl, who will be an ophthalmology resident at that time, hopes to join his father.
Congratulations Dr. Becker!
